SGMF: Methanol’s GHG performance depends heavily on production pathway
The Society for Gas as a Marine Fuel (SGMF) has published its first ISO-compliant Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) of methanol as a marine fuel, finding substantial emission reduction potential for renewable and synthetic pathways, but also significant variability depending on feedstocks, energy sources and production processes.
Conducted by WSP and critically peer reviewed by industry experts and academics, the “Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) study on the use of methanol as a marine fuel” study assesses 15 methanol production pathways in accordance with the IMO LCA Guidelines.
