Tri-fuel 114,000 DWT product and crude oil tanker gets nod during SMM

Lloyd’s Register (LR) and the Marine Design and Research Institute of China (MARIC) have secured Approval in Principle (AiP) for a 114,000 DWT product and crude oil tanker concept designed to accommodate future tri-fuel conversion to LNG, methanol or ammonia.

The tri-fuel-ready design aims to give shipowners greater flexibility amid uncertainty over the availability, infrastructure, economics and long-term adoption of alternative marine fuels. By incorporating conversion readiness at the design stage, the concept is intended to reduce the complexity of future retrofits and allow vessels to adapt as fuel technologies, regulations and supply chains develop.
