Marine fuel stability concerns persist despite ISO 8217 compliance
The latest Fuel Quality Report from Lloyd’s Register’s Fuel Oil Bunker Analysis and Advisory Service (FOBAS) highlights continued variability in marine fuel quality and its impact on vessel operations worldwide.
Covering the first half of 2026, the report identifies persistent concerns such as sulphur non-compliance, elevated catalytic fines and sediment-related stability issues across a range of fuel types and regions. It also examines cases in which fuels that met ISO 8217 requirements nevertheless caused stability and operational problems onboard, demonstrating that formal compliance does not always guarantee satisfactory performance in service.
