DNV: Seafarers must be trained on specific hazards related to hydrogen
DNV has completed a multi-year study for the European Maritime Safety Agency (EMSA) on the safety of hydrogen for use in ships, producing a final report and a non-mandatory guidance document.
The study emphasizes that hydrogen-fuelled ships require design-based safety measures, recommending secondary enclosures for all hydrogen-carrying components, even on open decks. It highlights that hydrogen hazards differ from other marine fuels like LNG, as even small leaks can form ignitable gas clouds, and hydrogen’s low ignition energy and detection challenges necessitate additional technical barriers to prevent explosions.
