World-first ship-to-ship ammonia bunkering marks step toward fuel supply at sea

The first ship-to-ship bunkering of ammonia to an ammonia-fuelled vessel has been completed in Japan, providing a practical test of one of the operations that will be essential if ammonia is to move from alternative-fuel trials into wider commercial shipping.

The timing is significant, as the industry begins testing how ammonia can be supplied to ships in practice, the IMO is simultaneously developing the safety framework needed to support its wider use. In May, the IMO Maritime Safety Committee approved interim guidelines for ships using ammonia as fuel, alongside interim training guidelines for seafarers working aboard ammonia-fuelled vessels.
