GCMD sets out approach to marine biofuel quantity assurance
Liquid biofuels are emerging as one of the shipping industry’s most practical routes to cutting greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions—without waiting for a new generation of vessels, engines or bunkering infrastructure.
According to the “Quantity assurance in marine biofuel supply chains” report published by the Global Centre for Maritime Decarbonization (GCMD) unlike many alternative fuels that require major investments in new technologies and dedicated supply chains, fatty acid methyl ester (FAME) and hydrotreated vegetable oil (HVO) can be introduced into existing marine fuel systems with relatively few modifications.
