IGU urges EU to protect bio-LNG pathway as maritime demand accelerates
The International Gas Union (IGU) has called for the preservation of liquefaction by equivalence, describing it as a critical pathway for scaling renewable maritime fuels and accelerating the uptake of bio-LNG in the shipping sector.
The organisation said that unlocking bio-LNG’s full bunkering potential will require legislative and regulatory frameworks that recognise and support the principle of liquefaction by equivalence. According to the IGU, the mechanism is one of the most effective ways to link biomethane production with growing maritime fuel demand at scale.
